Stenwood Elem. Meeting on I-66 Expansion Consuming School Grounds on June 16

On Tuesday June 16 at 6:30 pm, the Stenwood Elementary School PTA is hosting a meeting on I-66 impacts to this school.  In addition to the greater community damage and neighborhood impacts, this elementary school and its students would lose a significant portion of their limited recess and ball fields.

VDOT’s plans propose to remove the treeline in these photos (I-66 is behind the trees) and take additional land that would make the ballfield unusable for regulation play. The project would bring the interstate closer to the classrooms you see pictured here as well.

VDOT’s plans also propose to widen Gallows Road from 4 lanes to 6 lanes. As you can see in this photo, the children walk to school along Gallows and have to cross all these lanes of traffic to get to school. Several bus stops are also located on this road. Inducing demand on this road will bring more cars, speeding by in front of the school.
